The American Diabetes Association announces funding for clinical and basic science studies in three major areas of research that focus on cell-based insulin replacement in type 1 diabetes: 1. Genetic engineering of nonpancreatic cells into glucose-sensitive insulin-producing cells; 2. Transforming stem cells, pancreatic ductal cells, or pancreatic endocrine cell lines into glucose-sensitive insulin-producing cells; and 3. Xenografts of nonhuman islet cells.
