If encapsulation was ready for clinical trials today it still would take 4 to 7 years to go through the 3 phases of clinical trials and a cost of at least $200million if you take the Drug industry's estimates. If you have a promising encapsulation technology it appears that the Pharmaceutical industry will not become a major investor until you have completed a phase 1 if not a phase 2 clinical trial. So you will need at least $10M if not $50M to get to that stage. Even if you raise $200M going it alone will be difficult, a Pharmaceutical Partner will be able to complete development and market the product quicker.
Presently however, it appears most encapsulation technologies for diabetes are still a couple of years from reaching the clinical stage. Most of the encapsulation technologies appear to work in mice, rats and even in humans (Calfiore/LCT). The source of tissue will be the major hurdle to treat everybody and then marrying this source with the appropriate encapsulation to get the optimum therapy.
