As everyone will always say, "Isn't modern medicine just doing wonders?"
In an aside, I would wonder if the reason why higher blood sugar predicts the need for below-the-knee amputation following amputation of the front part of the foot is because it reflects the presence of an underlying, smoldering infection in the non-amputated part of the foot. After all, diabetic complications rarely set in before ten years after onset, so it is unlikely that more elevated bloodsugar per se for a few months after an operation is going to cause significant differences in vascular and neurological damage.
