In research I have done in the history of medicine, I have found a chorus of doctors in the industrializing parts of the world around 1810 commenting on the rise of diabetes in children and wondering what was causing it. Since maternal nursing and wetnurses did not go out of fashion until the 20th century, I doubt that these children were getting anything but human milk.
No doubt cow's milk is one of the culprits, but there are others lurking in how we changed our world with the industrial revolution. There has been, for example, a juvenile diabetes epidemic in Poland after the fall of Communism, which must have something to do with passing to a higher technological level -- but what?
