That's an excellent point, as the insurance companies would be the big winners if a cure for diabetes were discovered. What I have found is that insurance companies accept completely the conventional wisdom of the medical profession. They may push for a cheaper but equally effective drug, but they will never know enough to demand that a disease be cured rather than treated. Unfortunately, clinicians and insurance executives do not tend to be the type of people who push the envelope, and so are unlikely to even know about other possibilities.
Perhaps there is an insurance company out there somewhere who has the vision to understand that with a modest investment, the huge lifetime payouts for which they are responsible could go away. With their dollars and clout, they could potentially make something happen.
Great idea! Now, who knows some senior insurance decision-makers?
