As for the kinds of rice in asian diets.. I imagine it runs the gamut, but the kind of rice my asian relative tend to eat is essentially white rice (usually the sticky kind).
My understanding is that there isn't much scientific evidence for the Atkins style diet either. Mosty anecdotal stuff. It can be notoriously hard to effectively figure out what in the diet is important... for example.. if people fill up faster with the high protein Atkins diet then they may in fact consume fewer calories and thus lose weight....
The advantage of the caloric restriction diet seems to be that by eating many fewer calories I would expect fairly substantial weight loss. The other advantage may be to increase ones lifespan by 20% (although it may feel like 50%).
