I not really sure sure about the diet of countries like Japan or those in southeast Asia. Are you certain that rice is their primary intake of calories? And if this is so is it American style white rice or the cruder forms that have more fiber (non digestible and essentially non-caloric) and a low glycemic index? I don't know the answer to these question either.
There is a lot that we do not understand, but Bernstein's diet of 30 grams of carbs per day has done wonders for me. Besides medications and weight being lowered I feel better and younger.
What I found most interesting about this article is the way that a theory became scientic dogma without much supporting evidence. If that isn't a condemnation of the medical community then what is? Imagine for a moment a person that is dx'ed with type 2 and they approach their doctor and the ADA about care. The doctor, in pill pushing and treatment mode, says to take a pill. Then he also says that diabetics are prone to heart attacks and should eat less fat (supported by the dietician). Last he tells the patient to take blood pressure medication to treat his elevated blood pressure and to loose weight and quit being a "glutton" as Velinda states it in blame the patient mode.
The problem is that the doctor may make the person worse. Low fat diets have very little success. Most people that loose weight gain it back and then some. Blood pressure will become elevated higher with the weight gain and the glucophage mave have to give way to insulin therapy. All based upon advice that has little scientific support, yet it is dogma and the patient is just a glutton.
Well, I don't blame the patient. I blame the medical profession and their first accepting poorly understood theories. I also blame the medical profession for not keeping an open mind. They have become simple pill pushers for the drug companies. It is sad really that our health and our wish for a cure lies in their hands. (Did you know that their is not 1 perscription drug that CURES the patient? Really makes you think, doesn't it.)
