Susan,

I'm enthusiastic about DRI/Biogen's progress, ONE avenue to a Cure. But I am realistic and wise enough to know that it still may be some time when and if this treatment would prove safe and effective. (or work at all in humans) And even more time before my 5 year old would be permitted to be treated in this manner. I would not consider having him participate in any experimental trials, especially one involving the immune system, nor would he be allowed anyway.

But as with xenotransplantation, progress should not be impeded by unfounded fears of the unknown, or we will not get anywhere!
I have enough trust and confidence in the folks at DRI to think that they wouldn't attempt a human trial if they didn't feel the benefits clearly outweigh the risks. There are adults who are at the point in their lives that feel the risk is worth it, and those pioneers are to be commended, IMO.

I still see islet encapsulation as my "favorite" possible curative therapy because it seems to be the safest route, but for some reason in which I do not understand, it appears that it is not at the forefront. Maybe it's a false sense on my part, I'm not sure. (only a perception of a 'Mommy' of a child with Diabetes, mind you..)

What any scientific team chooses to pursue is out of my hands, so I will be enthusiastic about Anti-cd154, INGAP, or encapsulation if I see real progress by researchers at the top of their field, especially when they are headed to human trials. To 'pooh-pooh' reputable groundbreaking science is senseless, IMO. No one will force anyone to accept their Cure.

You asked if you should get 'too hopeful.' I think hope is ALWAYS healthy, much healthier than an outlook of resignation (hey it works for me!) but be balanced by the reality that not any single person holds a crystal ball in their hands that shows the future.

Best wishes,

Therese
