I think there is and should be enthusiasm for what the DRI is doing. Do I think this is "it"? No. Dr. Ricordi himself indicated that more must and will be done and tried. 5 years? I doubt it. The trials will span 18 months from the day of transplant, the DRI will be working on testing combinations of agents, as Dr. Ricordi said, and then more trials will be done. I think it will be an iterative process, each one, hopefully, leading to better and better results. FDA approval cycles are also a factor, of course. But I do believe this is very significant stuff. It could revolutionize islet and whole organ transplants, which would be fantastic. I'll be watching with eagerness to see how things progress.
