Camillo,
I like this practical, direct, stepwise approach. At the FDA Xenotransplantation Subcommittee meeting in Bethesda this week, Dr. David Cooper reported on the use of anti-CD154 in prolonging the survival of porcine whole organ xenografts in non-human primates. There was some tolerance induced, but not as significant as the dramatic results obtained with an allograft. Dr. Cooper speculated on the possible benefit of alpha-Gal antibody depletion in the recipient prior to transplant, transgenic pigs, and bone marrow transplant, all combined in a multi-pronged attempt to create tolerance.
Nature does not give up her answers easily!
