My 8 year old diabetic son developed tic syndrome about 4 months ago (turning his head to the side excessively). He has had some repetitive type motions in the past so I did not immediately relate it to diabetes or his insulin. We have cautiously added humalog to his regimen over the last six months and started using it routinely 4 months ago. Initially I was just using it in the morining and recently started using humalog a lot more in the evening. Just the last month the tics really started to increase to the point where we saw a neurologist.
For some reason I decided to take him off the humalog completely 3 days ago and the excessive movement in his head has almost stopped completely. I am curious if anyone else using humalog has noticed any unusual effects. The preservative in humalog is m-cresol which is not in the other insulins. I will continue to monitor him and if this does not reappear I plan of reporting this to Lilly. Again we parents and are kids are the guinea pigs for pharmaceutical companies who continue to not test their drugs in children. Is Lilly even persuing the registration in kids?
