Hey Allen, just wanted to mention that my 8yo is not diabetic but I am. He has been running trace protein on and off for years. It is usually morning urine. I go to a kidney doctor just for preventative maintenance and he said that he didn't think it was anything to worry about concerning my son. From what I've learned it can be because he is very active, as well, and is dehydrated. Also, his body is showing low for Vitamin C on an Organic Acid Test which can mean yeast issues. So, being diabetic, your son could have an undetected yeast problem because it's not as obvious in a male as it is in a female. Google taking high doses of Vitamin C.

As a side note, my husband who is also not diabetic has spilled trace protein.

As far as the ACE inhibitor goes, it has been shown that it protects the kidneys in diabetics. So, most are taking this as a preventive measure. I would take your son to a nephrologist and get an expert opinion.

Blessings.
