protein in urine (again) - advise please posted by Allen
Hi Allen,
I was put on statins a year or so ago after a single trace-positive test for protein. However, six months later, a further test recorded negative, so my consultant took me off them indicating that the test was probably a 'freak result'.
His opinion was that the longer I can avoid additional drugs, the better, however he views statins as a first line of defence and are generally side-effect free in most of the population and so wouldn't hesitate to put me back on if traces of protein show again.
Whilst HBA1Cs weren't easy available in my younger years, I suspect my bloods ran similarly to your son's to various times, so I'd be very sorry for your son if he was showing signs of kidney damage after just one poorly-controlled summer.
But, if that's your endo's requirement, I get the impression that statins are viewed more as a 'supplement' than 'medication'. So, perhaps nothing to worry about too much?
For the record, I'm a T1D, 35 years old, 22 years diagnosed, average HBA1C runs betweens mid-7s & mid-8s.
Best wishes,
Tyron
