Friends of TIF,
Could use some insight.
I just got a call from my wife leaving the endo's office with my son. His urine had "small" protein, 30 mg/mL. Endo wants to put him on blood pressure medicine for the protein (kidney protection). A couple of points:
1. Seems he always has a trace or small amount when they check him.
2. His urine was not early morning sample. Had been up for many hours.
3. Though he didn't exercise today, he runs a mile or 2 everyday in "team sports" class, and also has a separate weight training class.....he is very active and gets lots of exercise.
4. They did not order a morning test. I guess they figured they had seen a "trace".....one too many times. Should they?
5. Endo told my son that if this isn't stopped/controlled, he will suffer kidney damage within 7-10 years. (He is 15)
6. A1C's were up at 10.2. He had a "socially selfish" summer, whereby girls, pool parties, and overnights with friends took center-stage, while his diabetes was shunned. We tried to let him earn earn some independence....and a small reprieve from our constant oversight. I learned....I hope he did.
I just called endo and spoke with nurse. She said the medicine was "lifetime" to protect his kidneys. I don't know what it is yet.
I am rather mortified that we are here....at 15. Lifetime BP medicine????? All insight welcome!
Thanks,
Allen
