(Here's my question: How much closer to an accessible biohybrid artificial pancreas for humans, i.e. encapsulated porcine islets, would we be if JDRF invested the money in porcine islet research that they have invested and continue to invest in the APP?)
Live Webcast with JDRF's Dr. Aaron Kowalski:
Tune in Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 5:00 and 10:00 PM EST
It's been awhile since our last JDRF webcast, and we're excited to announce that we will be holding another one next week on the latest developments coming out of the Artificial Pancreas Project. Over the past few months, new and exciting initiatives have been made, and more studies have been published. So we are opening up the floor to any questions you may have on the APP with a live online Q+A session with Aaron Kowalski, Assistant Vice President for Treatment Therapies at JDRF.
Here's a recap of what has happened within the Artificial Pancreas Project over the last few months:
Earlier this week, we announced a new research program that will focus on accelerating the development of faster-acting insulin. Read the press release here. http://www.jdrf.org/index.cfm?page_id=114312
Our symposium at the ADA's Scientific Sessions in June was a huge success! You can read about it here http://www.jdrf.org/index.cfm?page_id=114006 and here http://www.jdrf.org/index.cfm?page_id=114001.
An artificial pancreas system using two hormones was able to successfully control blood sugar levels in patients with type 1 diabetes for more than 24 hours without hypoglycemia. For more information on this study, click here. http://www.jdrf.org/index.cfm?page_id=113668
In March, a consortium of researchers and industry partners in Europe announced a project to develop an artificial pancreas called AP_AT_Home. More on this here. http://www.jdrf.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.viewPage&page_id=639EE49B-1279-D3DC-F98779442D63DCA3&page_version_id=63A0AAA0-1279-D3DC-F948CF9998E9DE02
A landmark study in children and teenagers with type 1 diabetes showed that using a first-generation artificial pancreas system overnight can lower the risk of low blood sugar emergencies while sleeping, and at the same time improve diabetes control. The study was published in the journal The Lancet. You can read the press release here. http://www.jdrf.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.viewPage&page_id=9E97A677-1279-CFD5-A76167CC41B0EF94&page_version_id=9EA74F02-1279-CFD5-A75E23F19B0D3B3B

Participating is easy:
1. Ask your question in advance by going to our Artificial Pancreas Project website and filling out the Ask a Researcher form.
You may also ask your question via email. Please send it to askaresearcher_AT_jdrf.org and make the subject line 'Question for Dr. Kowalski for 8/26 Event.'
The deadline to ask your questions is 11:59PM EST on Wednesday, August 25.
2. Join us for the live video event at 5 PM EST and again at 10 PM EST on Thursday, January 26. The program is scheduled to last 1 hour. The video will be streamed through our Artificial Pancreas Project website: http://www.artificialpancreasproject.com/live-webcast.html
. Aaron will start by providing answers to as many of your questions as he can. We'll be streaming our video with the help of Ustream. Ustream's product allows participants to ask questions over the course of Aaron's presentation. So, time permitting, Aaron will respond to those as well.
