Deficiency of alpha-1 antitrypsin does not lead to diabetes---but rather lung and liver disease.
AAT inhibits enzymes that breakdown proteins and as such has been considered as an anti-inflammatory agent. Certainly it can inhibit some of the enzymes that appears to be activated during the destruction of the islets.
It thus has some plausibility as an agent that might lessen the inflammatory reaction triggered by auto-immnunity.
Lets wait and see how the trial gets on.
