Yes, safety was the primary focus of the phase I study.
Phase II will continue to measure safety as the dosing protocols will increase in intensity/frequency. However, measurement of effect of the treatment will be looked at and we are hoping that there will be a window of time when the autoreactive T-cells will be eliminated giving rise to regeneration of islets.
I stand by my statement that Dr. Faustman and Dr. Nathan are not allowed to release the scientific results until published. They are being submitted for review. They are quite confident that they will be published and are very excited to move the project along.
MGH is a very reputable establishment and my involvement in this project over the last 5-6 years has revealed at least one thing to me.MGH values its reputation as an outstanding institution and backs this research up 100%.
Nobody is saying that this is "the cure". However, I can say that each step has been successful and there is no reason to not continue as a possible treatment to reverse and cure established type I diabetes.
If the blood assays were a total flop in phase I, I doubt Dr. Faustman and Dr. Nathan would have approval from MGH Internal Review Committee to continue to phase II at the hospital's lab. Instead, the actions of progression with active fundraising ¶^ phase II indicate quite the opposite.
