Some patients are completely off insulin. As for the patients who still take insulin (LCT is only able to give sub-clinical doses under the rules of the clinical trial), the transplanted islets adjust to variations in blood glucose, and the patient just takes a background dose of long-acting insulin. So it should be simple to avoid hypoglycemic episodes because only a small percentage of insulin is unresponsive to glucose, and the majority is responsive to blood glucose level. In the final analysis, Smartinsulin is no more than an untested idea while LCT is proving its worth in real human clinical trials. So far hundreds of promises and good ideas have delivered nothing. I'll stick with results not promises.
