From what I understand from the second link(http://www.diabeteshealth.com/read/2010/02/09/6557/researchers-discover-protein-that-triggers-islet-cell-rejection/ ) the protein in discussion is related to the rejection of transplanted cells("A new system based on this mechanism has been shown to vastly increase transplant efficiency...").
Not directly related to autoimmunity(at least not in the link provided) but more likely to the "normal" rejection of a foreign cell.
The information is however very interesting but I guess that it has to do with the dampening of rejection after an islet transplant.
If I am mistaking, please correct me, since my medical knowledge is rather limited.
