Diabetes research is a multi-pronged effort, with many contributes using many distinct technologies. Should the artificial pancreas become a reality, and a lucrative one at that, then what you say may come to pass. But we're not there yet. In the last several years, the pace of clinical trials on D, and the number of companies and universities turning their attention and resources to D research has increased dramatically. I think predicting the future is extremely difficult; few people have excelled at this. I think it's premature at this point to assume that an artificial pancreas will halt D research. In contrast, some suspect that the increase in current funding may be a direct result of the the Edmonton protocol. A limited success led to a huge increase in effort. Might not an artificial pancreas do the same thing? I don't think anyone can possibly know, and I'd rather not stop potential progress on treatment based on fear associated with dire predictions of the future. After all, isn't that the same problem that LCT faced with the spread of pig viruses? I'd rather not add my voice to that pattern of reasoning.
