Dr. Elliott,

I am curious as to your thoughts regarding the challenge (or lack thereof) LCT might face in "acceptance" by the insurance companies of your treatment (assume successful treatment by whatever definition).

Most diabetics do not have the financial resources to self-fund $100,000+ treatments. Early adopters may bring the cost down, but I suspect the cost will still be elusive to most.

Do you foresee a supply/demand/efficiency threshold whereby insurance companies would see their coverage of the procedure cheaper than paying for maintenance (its all about reduced financial outlay for them)? The companies also consider maintenance and "time in plan". Example - My son is 14. The insurance company knows he will be off my plan within 10 years. If your treatment were available today, I suspect they would weigh 10 years of maintenance vs. LCT treatment 3 to 4 times over the 10 years (initial plus "top offs").

Your question made me think about all this. While I would do all in my power to pay for my son's treatment, the reality is that the viability of commercialization is dependent upon the insurance acceptance.

Admittingly, I know very little about this.....just a novice's perspective.

You are much appreciated,

Allen
