This procedure permeates O2 into the tissues even without good blood flow. Oxygenated tissues heal faster. It is used for burn victims, gangreen(sp?), bad bed sores, stuff that will not heal on its own.
There is a danger to the lungs, as too high a pressure of O2 for too long burns the lungs. I think the limit is 2 ATM O2 for 24 hours.
It has been touted as cure all in the early days and was rejected by the regular medical folks because of that but it actually does work for somethings and is in use in a few US hospitals.
