I've actually decided to switch back to NPH as well, to see if it clears up some really vague non-specific symptoms that I've been having since I switched. Mostly I seem to get symptoms of hyperglycemia when I'm not actually high.
I have no evidence that the insulin is causing some of these symptoms, but they did start just after my switch to lantus several years ago.
I've also experienced a rather sudden onset of retinopathy (I went to my opthamologist just before my switch to lantus and everything was fine, then within a year of switching I had progressive non-proliferative retinopathy in both eyes and macular edema in one eye). It's entirely possible of course that the changes were too small to notice in a regular eye exam and I didn't see a retinologist until symptoms started occuring, or it could have been the insulin...who knows. I have read that "rapid worsening" of retinopathy is a suspected side effect of lantus/levemir.
So I'm going to switch back for a couple of months and see if it helps with some of these things...I'll keep you posted.
