Arguably, nobody's forcing you to use lantus, or to pay for it. You could very easily stay on NPH, or use a pump even...
I am covered by a health plan, or else I likely wouldn't be on Lantus, given the cost, but regardless, I'm paying for the convenience of one basal injection per day and a faster acting short-acting insulin...I've never thought that using an analogue would lower my A1c significantly...it does allow me to inject during or after a meal though, without significant consequences. If I tried that with Humulin R I'd have no retinas left by now.
There were three studies, two of which found varying increased risk of cancer, and the health characteristics of the glargine group vs. the other groups were different enough that I'm really not convinced that the study means anything at all.
