Both companies have lucrative long-acting insulin franchises. Sanofi markets the popular insulin product Lantus while Novo Nordisk sells Levemir. The news appeared to boost shares of Amylin Pharmaceuticals /quotes/comstock/15*!amln /quotes/nls/amln ( AMLN 13.67 , +1.08 , +8.57% ) , which is developing a long-acting version of its non-insulin diabetes drug Byetta. Shares of Amylin jumped 11% to $14.02. Alkermes Inc. /quotes/comstock/15*!alks /quotes/nls/alks ( ALKS 11.11 , +0.21 , +1.93% ) and Eli Lilly & Co. /quotes/comstock/13*!lly /quotes/nls/lly ( LLY 35.36 , +0.03 , +0.07% ) co-developed the Byetta product, also called exenatide LAR. Shares of Alkermes were up 1% at $11.05, while Eli Lilly lost 3% at $34.26. Lilly is also a maker of insulin products. Meanwhile, U.S.-listed shares of Danish drugmaker H. Late Thursday, the company said the Food and Drug Administration had declined to approve Serdolect, its new drug for treating schizophrenia, citing the need for more information on what types of patients should use the product.
