But Andra, one or two people are expressing horror and despair over the idea that treatment could cost $100,000. Almost nothing of that price has anything to do with the intrinsic cost of a pig vs. a fish. Even if a tilapia was 1/100 the cost of a piglet, it would not make a dent in the $100,000.
Price will be driven down by increased supply and the economies of scale as the market expands, not by cheaper islets.
I am very interested in tilapia islets, but bear in mind that we have an 80-year history with pig insulin in humans, and zero with tilapia. We also have hundreds of xenografts of pig islets in humans with no adverse effects, and now we have successful clinical trials.
