http://www.abc.net.au/rn/scienceshow/stories/2009/2554683.htm describes a
complete cure for Type 2 diabetes using gastric bypass surgery. 155 operations:
Patient's diabetes is always completely cured in 6 days (long before they lose any
weight) and it never comes back.

The doctor and interviewer assume that Types 1 and 2 are completely different
diseases. However my understanding is that they are not that different and there
may be a continuous gradation between them. Type 1 diabetics do keep making
more islets and if the loss rate is low relative to the creation rate then they have
better control. On the other side we know that type 2 diabetics also suffer inflammation and significant loss of islets.

So I wonder how sure they were that all the 155 were pure type 2, which I presume
means no antibodies to gad/insulin/whatever.

I would really like to know what would happen if a type 1 diabetic had this
procedure. Maybe some diabetic doctor would like to subject themself to the
procedure in the great tradition of medical researchers experimenting on
themselves. Chance to be famous.
