Dear Honorable Members of the New Zealand Cabinet,
I am the mother of a 7 year old son diagnosed with Diabetes Type 1 4 years ago. I trust by know you are aware of the poor treatment options for this terrible disease. Insulin alone accounts for most ER visits and since its discovery 87 years ago this is the only serious advance in diabetes treatment. I have been writing to you in the past Honorable Minister Cunliffe in support of LCT's clinical trials and your answer mentioned PERV infection risc and religious concern. The pigs used in this trial are the most safe and clean of any infection animals in the world, there is no animal that can come even close in terms of safety. (and in the history of humanity not a single individual has been infected with PERV)With respect to religious believes while New Zealand has a very good record at respecting all religious believes and practices, not one single decision regarding the health of an individual has been made taking into account other people religious believes. There is a large incidence of kidney failure in Maori population due to diabetes type 1. While European patients have access to more then 7 million donors in New Zealand and Australia, Maori experience problems when they need a transplantation because of their rare tissue type. When approving the LCT trials you not only save 10 million diabetics around the globe but LCT may also prove the only way you can save the lives of New Zealand's Maori population with diabetes type 1 complications. In the end I would like to ask you with all my heart to approve the start of LCT trails. Every day millions of diabetics inject a deadly drug, struggle with complication or live their lives in fear of them. By not giving an answer or by denying the commence of these trials you will condemn this people to fear, pain and suffering. Diabetics all around the globe now have a hope. Don't take this away from us. You can save and preserve life. Please give us this chance.
Thank you for your time,
Sincerely,
