Re: C-peptide posted by Sarah
Hey Sarah,
By the 1970s, Novo had come up with a purification method for "highly purified" animal insulins that extracted almost 100% of the C-peptide from the natural pancreases.
But patients that HAD been on the insulins for years had more access to generate their own C-peptide. Yes, it was a *very* small amount but still MORE than genetically modified human insulins allowed.
All insulins sold by Lilly, Novo and Aventis TODAY are completely deficient of C-peptide. E.coli are injected with ONLY the insulin polypeptides and NOT the CONNECTING PEPTIDE.
Beta cells product PROinsulin containing 3 chains: A chain (insulin), B chain (insulin), and C-chain (anti-insulin). C prevents A and B from causing damage to the body -- which is why Type 2 diabetes has a SURPLLUS of C-peptide.
Which is explains why NOVO (NYSE: NVO) , Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) and Aventis (NYSE: SNY) took it out --- 10% of Type 1s are good for business but 90% of Typp 2s potentially BOOST business to a whole new threshold.
Why must Type 1s sufer for the sake of business?
