Thank you for stating your points nicely. The intent of my post was to display the "ignored" ugly side, if you will, of what can happen to some of us children who have inherited this disease. It was also directed at people who have NOT had children yet, as I assume no one who has already had children as a Type 1 could ever fathom that maybe they should not have. I have simply been recommending genetic counselling and/or testing for couples, particularly for those at the highest risk (i.e. family hx, multiple autoimmunities, onset earlier than age 9, etc.) I understand most people will still go ahead and have kids, as there are many factors.

Pt. 1-Do you not want a child that is smart, attractive, and healthy? Or would you have a child who may have many disadvantages or painful diseases? For some reason, people fail to grasp the concept that we as potential parents have control over the children we create (or don't). It is *not* a bad thing to reduce the incidence of disease or select a healthy mate. Ask any doctor who sees severely ill children with genetic diseases and they will tell you exactly the same thing.

PT. 2-The intent is to benefit *society* by reducing the incidence of this disease. You can not deny that the incidence of Type 1 is increasing, and I'm sorry, but I think we all know that Type 1 diabetics having children has played a role, regardless on any "environmental" factors. We all know that without the required genetics, these environmental factors would not affect us.

I am not condemning people who have kids. I am more concerned about the day in which they may have to come to terms with the fact that their child is now diabetic because of them and the cycle continues. Like I said, READ THAT ARTICLE AGAIN. It's heartbreakingly sad. Some can live with that choice, some can't. Do not attack us for that.
