The issue we were discussing was whether it was moral to choose to expose a future child to the heightened risk of diabetes. You can't know in advance whether a child's case of diabetes will be a fortunate or an unfortunate one, nor whether the child will hang himself out of suicidal despair over the complications or be able to drug himself with fatuous optimism into not comprehending his tragic situation. To make the choice to accept those risks for another human being as yet unborn, without being able to consult that person in the least, seems morally indefensible.
