I think most type 1 adults would say that they are happy they were born and are alive, simply because they don't have the courage to face up to the despair that would come if they admitted the awful truth to themselves that they really wish they had never been born. Ironically, I think in a way I am less depressed than most people are about being diabetic, since I can admit to myself that diabetes has essentially ruined my life, and yet still carry on. In contrast, the optimism and resilience of most people is so fragile that they cannot afford to admit this and instead have to 'drug' themselves with a variety of unrealistic or optimistic misperceptions.
