~snip~ I personally feel that I would need to ensure my child is a)extremely attractive, b)will have a high IQ, c)will have a resilient personality, d) will be athletic/talented, e)will have no other diseases from the father's side etc. just to somehow give them a SOMEWHAT normal chance at having enjoyment out of life. ~snip~
And what will you do when your perfect child falls out of a bunk bed and suffers brain damage or gets into a car accident and ends up paralyzed from the neck down? Life is nothing but risk. We do our damnest to avoid the worst problems, but there's no guarantee. Why not stop living in fear and just accept the fact that you can't control it all?
By the way; I'm short, not even slightly athletic, average looking, average IQ, and have a ton of diseases on both sides of the family. I do have a resilient personality. I use a walker, tremble all the time, and some days it's everything I have to use the bathroom.
And I'm happy as hell, deeply in love with my husband who's in love with me (and presently deployed to Iraq for a year), I enjoy two wonderful children (one with diabetes), and I have a lot of very good friends.
Yes, I get depressed. For a day or two. Then I slap myself out of it. Dear God I hate wasting my time feeling sorry for myself. There are many more things that I'd rather do.
All you people who think diabetes is the end of the world need to shift the focus. Yes, it really sucks. It's expensive, frustrating, unfair, and crappy in many ways. But it could be worse. Much, *MUCH* worse. Pet a kitty, read a great book, have a beer by a fire under the stars with people you enjoy. Don't let this disease kill your soul before your body. If you get a high reading, bolus and move on. Crap happens.
And I am recommending that my son put his kids on a gluten/casein free diet and make sure they get plenty of sunshine! (Don't live in fear, but don't intentionally put your arm in a bear trap either!) ;-)
