I feel that anyone who has a serious genetic illness that can be passed on, multiple autoimmune disorders, or a strong family history of such should not have children, or should at least get genetic testing/counselling prior to conceiving. It's just common sense to think of the well-being of your future children.
I am not trying to start a debate, I simply just am a logical person. I personally would not want to live with knowing that I passed on this horrid disease and created a child who will suffer at no fault of their own. This is my choice, and I am entitled to it.
For me, the issue is difficult, because I DO have many qualities I would like to pass on. However, my looks, intelligence, talents, and personality will not overcome the struggle that my child would have to endure to even attempt to utilize these traits.
I am not avocating an extreme approach per se, rather genetic counselling/testing, and intelligent choices.
There are some people who will diregard the genetic testing. If you can live with yourself and not feel guilty when the time may come to inject your dying child with insulin for the first time, then I also respect your choice. However, who is respecting the child?
