I called my doctor one day after not having taken any insulin for a week. I told him my fasting level were running around 250. Then I asked him how my levels could be that low, or manage to get that low, if I weren't taking any insulin for an entire week. He had no clue as to why. When I was diagnosed and put on insulin I was producing just under 10% of my own insulin. I am definitely a type 1, but obviously still produce a "negligble" amount of my own insulin. I've often wondered if this "neglgible" amount of insulin accounts for people termed "brittle" diabetic. There would be absolutely no way to figure out how much exogenous insulin to take if your body was still randomly producing small amounts of its own insulin, hence you could wind up going low even when you've dosed appropriately. Just a theory.
