Halleleujah !!!! Now lets get the insurers to cover the cost of this thing.

New Glucose Monitors Approved
April 2006
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new blood glucose meter and a new continuous glucose monitoring system.

The meter, made by Abbott Laboratories, is called the FreeStyle Freedom. Like Abbott's other FreeStyle meters, the Freedom requires 0.3-microliter blood sample, which can be taken from a finger, forearm, thigh, or palm. Results are displayed in five seconds. In a press release, Abbott said the meter would be available sometime in April.

The continuous glucose monitoring system, made by DexCom, is called the DexCom STS. It is made up of two main components: a sensor, which is inserted just below the skin, and a receiver. The sensor measures glucose levels continuously and transmits them wirelessly to the receiver. The receiver can display results in real time or show trends over a period of one, three, or nine hours. It can also be programmed to alert the user to high or low readings. The sensor is worn for three days, then discarded and replaced.

The DexCom STS is the second real-time glucose monitoring system to be approved by the FDA. The first, Minimed's Guardian RT, was approved last fall but has been released only in selected cities. At the time this article was written, DexCom was planning to begin shipping its system to retailers by mid-April.
