Inhaled insulin's cost may take breath away posted by Ellen
22 years ago I took out world wide patents for a machine that delivered insulin via the lung with a degree of accuracy.Absorbtion of aerosolised insulin was first shown in 1924.
Several diabetic patients tried it for up to six months, and usually attained similar glucose profiles to their customary injected insulin, for up to six months ,but after that time none wanted to proceed. The lung delivery became erratic at times, and necessitated temporary return to insulin injections.
In other words it was of no advantage.
The spectre of long term damage to the lungs, including cancer, and an abnormal activation of the immune system as is found with some other proteins/peptides administered by aerosol, persuaded me to drop the idea.
In any case it was wasteful of insulin, and cost a lot more than standard treatment.
I would be surprised if anything has changed.
