Good question.
The variation is potentially HUGE. If they get positive results within the first month, that would expedite the process much faster as opposed to minor but still clinically significant results/progress after 1 year.
It's really hard to say. I know that it will still take some time to refine things if this is shown to work. The good thing is, the first compound, BCG, is easy to obtain, safe, and cheap, so that half of the equation will help speed availability once proper dosing procedure has been determined.
At least we know things seem to be getting closer to finding answers. I know we have been let down by diabetes research many a times, or frustrated by the stalling. At least this has logical merit. Look at all of the endless political gridlock and biological setbacks (Surprise! It really IS hard to engineer functional human tissue!) happening within stem cell reserch, and it doesn't even address the cause of Type 1 diabetes, which is autoimmunity.
Hopefully we will have some indication of Phase 1 progress by the end of this year.
