I can speak from (stupid) personal experience on that one. When I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, there was talk that niacinamide was effective in maintaining the survival of the remaining islets. I accidentally bought niacin (thinking they were the same) and turned red as a beet after about 2 days with a similar "hair shirt" sensation. People wondered if I was embarrassed or sunburned. When I realized my mistake, I switched to niacinamide and the side effects stopped. Niacin has no beneficial effect on islets.
