It could be as well that it is simply rapidly transformed into something else. But it could still be effective, perhaps just because of its by-products.

One recent study has shown that in diabetic mice administration of pyruvate scavenges the free radicals produced by excess blood sugar and thus prevents the damage to DNA which these can cause: K. R. Hegde, et al, "Morphogenetic and Apoptotic Chnages in Diabetic Cataract: Prevention by Pyruvate," Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, vol. 252 (July, 2004) pp. 233-237. The risk/benefit analysis of diabetics taking pyruvate now looks even better to me.
